History of Byzantium

Sign up for this course to go deep into Byzantine history, one of the important eras to study. Students will learn how the Byzantine Empire shaped the world we live in today and its impact on Western culture.

Prerequisite: None

Suggested grade level: 11th to 12th grade. 10th grade is acceptable for advanced readers.

Suggested credit: One full semester Byzantine History or World History. For a full year credit of World History, sign up for “History of Japan” in the spring.

Description

This course will acquaint students with a basic introduction to the political and cultural history of the Byzantine Empire. Major dates, persons, battles, and events will all be covered, as well as important cultural and religious ideas. This course will help students better understand the Christian heritage of the east and Byzantium’s continuing influence on Christendom.

Materials and Homework

Course Materials: Required textbook is A Concise History of Byzantium by Warren Treadgold, 1st edition, ISBN #0333718305 (https://amzn.to/3rbUvC1) or 2nd edition ISBN #978-1352009873 (https://amzn.to/3oKmAPc)

Homework: Homework will consist of weekly readings from the textbook (approx. one hour per week), automated weekly quizzes, and occasional essay questions graded by the instructor.
